By the end of Book VIII, we have learned all about the end of the adventures of Odysseus, and of his eight years with Calypso. There are two years of wanderings - or the beginning and middle of the narration - which we have yet to hear, and these are told by Odysseus himself in Books IX to XII, in chronological sequence, with very little interruption. Homer's narrative in the first twelve books describes a circle, beginning on the island of Ogygia, where Odysseus is a captive, and ending in Book XII with Odysseus describing his landing on that same island.
Take, for example, the very first lamentation in the book, but not by any means the worst- that of Charicles' father, on the death of his son, in a riding accident: My son, in how different a state hast thou returned from that in which thou didst leave me! Ill betide all horsemanship! Neither hast thou died by any common death, nor art thou brought back a corpse comely in thy death; others who die preserve their well-known lineaments, and though the living beauty of the countenance be gone, the image is preserved, which by its mimickry of sleep consoles the mourner.
As Samuel Lee Wolff so aptly remarks of Clitopho and Leucippe: 'To recount the activity of Fortune in this story is to recount the story itself'. 72 There is no basis, for example, for the initial elopement of Clitopho and Leucippe, an elopement which leads to all their subsequent perilous adventures. The flight is attributed to Fortune, which delayed a letter: if the letter had arrived on time the couple would not have been tempted to elope. The assumption must be that since Fortune delayed the letter, Fortune forced the couple to elope: this is strange reasoning, but nevertheless, typical of Achilles Tatius.
