So what might have been an old-fashioned, bareknuckled power struggle between coach and president was contaminated by trustee intervention. That, of course, was their prerogative, but such puppeteering renders the presidency flaccid and tempts chaos. Initially, the board's meddling favored Perles. But not without a price. It boomeranged on Perles in the end, when two pivotal Page xxi board seats were taken over in 1990 by trustees Dee Cook and Jack Shingleton who were sympathetic to DiBiaggio and shared his priorities.

It's a shame that he got trapped in all the political conflict at Michigan State, because with the service and commitment he gave for 12 years as head coachand many more as a student and an assistanthe should have been honored instead of fired. I'd like to have seen what would have happened if some department head fired an English professor who had served the school with such distinction for 12 years. When Penn State was admitted to the Big Ten Conference, George was one of the first to give me a congratulatory phone calland it came from a cellular phone on his practice field at the Aloha Bowl.
