As many people have only a sketchy idea of genetics, they may seek nongenetic explanations for what has happened in the family. Other information about influences on health may be used to draw conclusions about the cause of a disease or syndrome. For example, a mother who has a child with learning delay may question the quality of her diet during the pregnancy [3].

Although young babies have a positive self-concept, the process of growing up inevitably damages that concept, and the person loses their confidence in their own ability to direct their lives.
