This essentially demonstrates the units, tens and hundreds as building blocks to be combined to make different• size numbers. Being able to make and take apart such numbers is great for reinfor cing the structure of the number system, and I particularly like the fact that the arrows come with colour-matched dice. 6 Number fans represent numbers using digits but offer no sense of quantity Gattegno charts (Faux, 1998) perform a similar role since these too illustrate• the building blocks and are particularly useful for dealing with decimals as well as whole numbers.

How many do they think there could be? All reasonable suggestions accepted, of course, but for the purposes of this lesson, imagine that there are 10. So how many segments would there be if we had two oranges? Three? Using different numbers of oranges and individual segments, illustrate different values, discussing how those numbers would be written down. This food focus can easily be extended beyond 99. If I have a bag with 10 oranges, or a box with 10 packets of biscuits, I can begin to build larger numbers and compare the physical representation of the number with how it is written.

The example here uses a decimal number but could equally focus on whole numbers and could have more or fewer digits. Using the appropriate portion of the Gattegno chart, pairs should select different digits, one of each value. In the case of the example below, the pair would select a unit, a tenth, a hundredth and a thousandth, and discuss the number that the separate parts will generate once combined. Note that chart layout varies; here we see the smallest values in the top row but it could equally be the biggest numbers first.
