It appears as though the more information is generated the more difficult it becomes to explain clearly Africa’s growth and development experience. Like the nineteenth century map of Africa, it seems that our understanding of Africa’s economic growth and development experiences, in particular, is increasingly becoming deficient, despite the exponential growth in information available.

Chapter 3 focuses on the Bank and the Fund’s engagement in Africa’s development challenges, and the strategies designed to respond to them. Chapter 4 discusses the empirical growth studies on Africa. Focus here is on empirical growth studies and the various explanations offered for the observed economic growth performance. Issues related to the state and development in Africa are discussed in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 discusses the views which I have broadly referred to as the political economy approach.
