As we can see from these few examples, then, in philosophy as well as physics the notion of absolute time has been in question for much of the modern period. In Jonathan Boyarin’s 1994 collection Remapping Memory: The Politics of Timespace, an important question flows from this. Why, despite the efforts of such influential thinkers, does the ‘common-sense’ notion of time which we encounter almost everywhere in Western societies continue to reflect a dehumanised and abstract, Newtonian understanding of time?

In Stevenson’s essay, D. H.
