That was it: this whole thing between Rob and herself was beyond her control. ’ she announced brightly, at the same time moving away from the warmth of Rob’s arm, smiling up at him as she ignored the look of disappointment in his eyes. ’ She wasn’t one hundred per cent sure about the ‘we’ part of that suggestion, but it was a way of getting them out of the intimate confines of her apartment. Before they did something they would both regret! ‘There’s a fruit and vegetable shop in the next street that’s selling them, and I’m sure one of the other shops will sell decorations and lights,’ she added encouragingly, when Rob didn’t respond to her suggestion.

He looked embarrassed now. ’ They might have done for Barnaby, but as far as Juliette was concerned nothing between them had changed… The first thing Juliette noticed the next morning as she stepped onto the shop floor at Romeo’s was that there was different music playing over the tannoy system. Still Christmas music, which was fine with her, but not the same CD that had been playing ad nauseam for the last few weeks. Because she had mentioned the repetition to Rob? As soon as the thought entered her head she knew how ridiculous it was; as if anything she had said to Rob was of any importance to him!

He gave an impatient shake of his head. ’ She gave a rueful smile. ‘To tell me that he had finally won Deborah back. ’ Juliette wasn’t completely sure about that last statement herself. But one thing she did know: Barnaby had certainly learnt his lesson! Rob frowned disapprovingly. ’ Juliette smiled. ’ ‘Not soon enough,’ Rob rasped. Juliette looked at him searchingly. ‘What did you mean just now? ’ He made an impatient movement. ‘You’re not going to like me for this…’ ‘Tell me anyway,’ she invited huskily, still buoyed by the emotion she had seen so briefly in his eyes.
