I’m constantly looking for information on the NHL or hockey in general. To be the best, you have to look at other people, at trends and everything that’s going on. The more you can find that will give you a little extra knowledge or a special edge, the better off you’ll be. If you’re blind about what’s going on around you, then you’re not doing your job. For me, to get to the rink and see somebody who doesn’t know if the Flyers won or lost the night before, or how the Rangers or the Islanders did, that’s garbage.

By the summer of ’05, Stevens hadn’t officially retired, but it didn’t seem likely he was coming back. He had all but disappeared, and we had already started to adjust to life without him. But Niedermayer was another case altogether. He was free to sign with the highest bidder, but with Daneyko and Stevens gone, we needed him more than ever. I called him a few times after the 2003–04 season, and spoke to him at the 2004 World Cup, but it didn’t seem like he knew what he wanted. I think the Devils tried to play it smart by seeking a trade for his brother, Rob, who already played for Anaheim, but the Ducks’ new GM, Brian Burke, wouldn’t make that deal.

As I watched the bench, I could see there wasn’t much going on, and certainly not a lot of emotion. Players were making mistakes, but they weren’t feeling those errors as if they were really costing 36 Ch apter 2 the team. They were just individual mistakes made by a team of individuals, or so it seemed. It also gave me some time to look at what was going on around the league as the NHL got back to work after missing an entire season. I watched every single game on TV I could, which wasn’t much different from my usual routine.
