Years later, a forensic psychiatrist would classify Karen’s teenage incident of swallowing pills as a suicidal gesture and this incident in the kitchen as a genuine suicide attempt. Karen claimed she got her wish to go home after she finally spoke to Gene’s commander about her wishes, but Gene said he sent her back himself after one of his men broke down and told him that he’d been having an affair with her.

His destination was a five-hour drive from his house in Vallejo, and about a half hour north of Eureka, the coastal city in Humboldt County where he and Wayne grew up. M. when Rodney pulled off the coastal Highway 101, headed east, and turned into the driveway of the motel, which was surrounded by a commanding stand of redwood trees, some three hundred feet tall. Immediately to the right was the main motel building, which housed the office, a restaurant, and a bar, where Wayne had spent most of the day, drinking and playing pool with the bartender.

The incident earned Wayne a weeklong suspension, but Wayne refused to see a counselor. The tension peaked when Wayne grabbed his mother in the garage during an argument over his behavior. For the first time, Karen felt scared of her own son. “Don’t ever do that again, Wayne,” she recalled telling him. ” Years later, Karen would acknowledge that perhaps Wayne felt neglected because she and Steve went out so much; she was having fun for the first time in her life. She said they tried to include the boys when they went bowling or to baseball games, but neither one usually wanted to go.
