As noted earlier, the Tapers moved to New York in early January, but there were other minor incidents that were interesting during that period. In San Francisco, the Steers lost to the Saints in a close contest, delayed, with five seconds left, when a teenager sneaked onto the floor at a time-out and absconded with the game ball. After finally finding another acceptable ball, the game resumed. Snowstorms delayed games in Kansas City, Wichita and Chicago. A player signed by the Steers was unable to play because his employer, the Fort Worth School District, prohibited their coaches from playing professional basketball, baseball or football.

Melvin Davis of Wichita wrote in early April, seeking a possible entry. This was tied to the fact that the Vickers Oilers of Wichita announced their withdrawal from the NIBL the day before Davis sent his letter. He made a case for his city, based on the venue; the attendance at past Vickers games; the possibility of their Vickers coach, Alex Hannum, being available; the quality of the players available in the area; and the general support for basketball in the area. Saperstein sent two follow-up wires to Davis, which went unanswered, after which one of Saperstein’s colleagues called Davis, only to find him on vacation in Florida.

But the couple of other cities which included Denver, Houston, Mexico City and Kansas City just were not ready for this sort of thing. In conferences with Maurice Podoloff, president of the NBA, in May and June of 1959, he advised, If I could get two “solid” groups in Los Angeles and San Francisco, they would be interested in taking in the two groups for the season after next [1960-1961] ... and asked that applications be made ... and consequently I made one for the Los Angeles group.
