Always treat the weapon as if it is loaded. 2. Always apply the safety catch when loading a weapon, to ensure that an unintentional discharge does not occur. 3. Keep your finger away from the trigger until it is time to fire the weapon. The correct safe position for the finger is along the side of the pistol frame. 4. Only use projectiles designed to be used in your weapon. It is truly amazing that anyone would consider putting anything other than the correct projectile in their weapon but apparently it does happen, which is why manufactures warn against this practice in the literature they issue with each weapon they produce.

I personally prefer to use a pistol that fires pellets as this is a much more sophisticated projectile than a BB, especially when quality match-grade pellets are used. Such pellets are capable of a greater degree of consistency and accuracy, which is why hunters and match shooters use high-quality pellets in their weapons rather than BBs. The BB is used for fast-fire fun shooting, not for pin-point accuracy. BBs are considerably cheaper to buy than pellets due to their crude design; this may well be a consideration, as a keen pistol shot will fire thousands of projectiles every year.

The lie of the land will also dictate the maximum range of a projectile: if there is a sloping hill 10m behind your range, then regardless of a projectile’s maximum range it cannot achieve it due to the presence of such an obstacle. In short, you should always have in mind the maximum achievable range of your weapon under ideal conditions, but you should also have an understanding of what will happen in the real world where such conditions almost never exist. 8. Never transport a loaded weapon.
